I would call it "dystopian sci-fi with a dash of horror"
Jerry mentioned the audio, which is pretty damn creepy, especially in the really fleshed-out first level and in the later level where there's a miniboss out to get you (Sander Cohen). We made a lot of fun of the pedo-angle re: the Little Sisters and Big Daddies, not to say it isn't there, but in terms of being a cool thing to put in a game, they're a cool thing to put in a game. Not only are they a roving monster in the levels of a game that you're playing that is not at all a random encounter... they're not even looking for you. They're walking around extracting drugs from corpses. If you leave them to it, they'll leave you alone. I really appreciated what they added to the game, both in terms of creating a neutral-but-dangerous inhabitant and in terms of how they helped create a history of Rapture: somehow this place has gotten to a state where mutant kids are walking around sucking drugs out of dead people, and those drugs are so valuable that they need giant hulking escorts. ...and those escorts are AWESOME LOOKING ANTIQUEY DIVER GUYS WITH DRILL HANDS. Overall, I've recommended Bioshock a ton to people over the years as a really easy game that is totally worth your time for the visuals, sound, and story. There's a lot of games out there with audio logs lying around; usually they are not worth listening to. In Bioshock they're worth listening to. It's a bona fide interesting story, with interesting characters (though almost all of them are unfortunately dead before you meet them) and a great setting.
