Re: I have a beef with this show

On the one hand, it's nice that it's exposing a lot of people to some basic sciencey concepts that everyone should know. On the other, they spend wayyyy too much time with their CGI spacechip horseshit and not enough interviews with actual scientists. Each episode of Cosmos has about 1/3rd the amount of content of any episode of Nova and the other 2/3s are me sitting through some lovingly detailed cartoon. I find it really annoying that Neil Degrasse Tyson feels like he needs to wrap the science in all that BS, but based on his background he probably knows a lot better than me what will land with a mainstream audience and I should just stick to Radiolab. :(
Tyson has always been clear that his intent is to arouse curiosity instead of inform; to make the public more interested in science, push their representatives to back science, and ultimately get NASA the funding it needs. Every one of his speeches, shows, and other media appearances have been completely in line with that intention. So yes, you don't get as much information from Cosmos 2 as you do from Nova, that's not what it's intended to do.
