Yeah, this was great - and I was ready to give up on McQuarrie after Persons Unk
I loved how reality seemed to warp around Jack, as if the entire film were taking place inside a daydream (the Bond Girl defense attorney started presenting like a busty baboon, every car became a muscle car, etc.). And McQuarrie never cuts to action for action's sake; every action sequence has a very clear through line, and every shot furthers that narrative - it's almost like watching a really well-crafted war comic play out, panel by panel (think Ron Wagner). McQuarrie's good at communicating where each character in a gunfight is, where he wants to be, and how he plans to make it happen, to the point where you're as surprised as they are when it doesn't work out. He's basically the antithesis to all those directors who think if you put enough muzzle flashes and destruction on screen, the excitement will take care of itself. And he's funny too! Think Parker's blind dive into the dry fountain full of broken glass in The Way of the Gun, or Jack realizing too late his already ridiculously inadequate knife fell out of his pants while he was running. Mission Impossible 4 wasn't too bad, either, which isn't something I thought I'd ever say about a Mission Impossible movie. Also, I watched 21 Jump Street based on your recommendation and it was the best thing I saw all year. So thanks for that.
