At the time, TA was to my knowledge the only RTS that had: - realistic ordnance behavior (once fired, a projectile could actually miss its target) - better realism for weapon range and rate of fire - very fragile units - 3D terrain and units Resulting in a more simulatory gameplay compared to something like Starcraft. Combined with an extremely dry presentation, it was a game that didn't have a very broad appeal, but rather gathered a hard core of dedicated fans. I was one of those fans. But my enjoyment of the game was very specific. Fuck the campaign, I only enjoyed skirmish vs one or a couple CPUs on a medium, non-metal map (the AI would spread like a virus on metal maps, and fuck those huge maps, the game would really begin to overstay its welcome on those things). Fuck naval units (of course), fuck air units (except builders and scouts), fuck vehicles, fuck most robots. Artillery, nukes and Peewees. That's what the game boiled down to for me. Artillery, nukes and Peewees. And that's great. Artillery, nukes and Peewees are fun for a while. But there can be no denying that a game like Starcraft had a lot more work put into balancing the units and the gameplay, and developing the campaign; it's a more finished, coherent game. TA only ever felt half-finished. Planetary Annihilation seems like more of the same. Bland campaign, bland placeholder-like units (that fittingly become simple icons when you zoom out), bland maps. Friggin cel-shading. No saving is just adding insult to injury. That said, as with TA, I like some of the elements in PA, and I'll be playing around with it some more for sure.
