Peter Molyneux's The Movies

Finally saw it.
I heard enough that I decided to approach it as its own self-contained film and I was actually enjoying the first half when the movie was doing its own thing entirely. Agreed the action scenes were terrible, but isn't that par for the course these days? This probably would have been a much better movie if it had never been called Robocop. Then halfway through the movie someone said they needed to remake all the iconic scenes from Robocop and it turned into total shit. I was wincing at the painful plot manipulations required to make Murphy want to kill Keaton. "Emotions mess with the system" is not nearly as clever or as satisfying as, "Dick, you're FIRED!" But the real thing that irritated me about the movie was the opening scene. If Verhoven were doing this script, when the kid came at the ED-209 with the kitchen knife, you know at the very least you'd see blood spattered across the pretty news girl's face. Instead the way they tried to build audience sympathy was having suicide bombers say, "Remember, we're not trying to kill any people!" Jerry may have seen that as meta-satire, I saw it as somebody losing their nerve and not trusting the audience. With Robocop 1 you were never wondering, "Are they being serious, or is this a satire?"
