To me the underlying political message of the movie was about American exceptionalism. People in Mexico are being murdered by giant aliens but the US still has a closed border policy. That can be used as a metaphor for drug cartel violence, Syrian civil war refugees, or environmental devastation. Two Americans are trapped in Mexico then forced to learn how bad the situation they'd been sheltered from in the states really is. But once they reach that Donald Trump wet dream border wall they learn that the safety of isolationism was an illusion all along. I suppose the fact that they died in the end isn't that bad the more I think about it, but my other comments on how dumb it was to reveal the Aliens in full view bad CG from the start still stand.[/quote]
