Re: Achievements are Good.

Cheevos are optional challenges for people who enjoy that sort of thing. You don't have to do them, and - crucially - nothing is withheld from you if you don't. Nothing except a pop-up message, one which is only personally relevant to someone who feels he had to push beyond his own limitations to see it. I understand the argument against Achievements. Why should someone else get a sense of satisfaction from doing a thing? It's not fair! I should get the same satisfaction from not doing the thing, and if I can't have it, it should be taken away from him. How fortunate are we as adults to have rediscovered the destructive selfishness of a child at play. When asked why he attempted to climb Mount Everest, George Mallory replied "Because it was there." Plenty of people throughout history have been forced to climb mountains for more specific reasons - to feed their families, to escape a gulag, to get to the other side. It would be perfectly reasonable for any of those people to curse the world for not being flat. It would be somewhat less reasonable for someone whose only experience with mountains was seeing George Mallory's smug face on a newspaper. (99% of Achievements aren't worth pursuing. Those could all go, if only to make it easier to find the really fun ones.)
The only time I was ever really repulsed by achievements was when I read a post on Qt3 before Tom evicted a lot of the terrible posters. I wish I remembered the post precisely, but it's probably better that nothing gets linked. I just remember some dude acting smug and condescending towards games that didn't have achievements. It doesn't sound all that bad, but those people had a way of coming off much worse than the English language deserved. I think I like cheevo fans to be quiet and respectful and humble and prone to self-deprecation when it comes to that subject. "Yes, I'm a loser but hey, what can I say, love me some of those achievements ha ha." Anyway, it was a long time ago and I think, well, I hope all associated communities have buried the hatchet.
