Cutting this off
as it's veering dangerously close to the event horizon of Who would win in a fight? and FAG NT
Batman can spend all issue getting beaten down and put through the ringer, but we still know that on the second-to-last page he's going to benchpress a coffin lid through six hundred pounds of dirt to crawl his way out of the grave and shove his fist down the bad guy's throat. That's not the interesting part. The interesting part is why he does it, because that part's real. You can't cheat that part.
Sorry, I'm not interested in Batman either (I mean OKAY when I was 4 I loved the '66 show). I'd definitely rather see my characters go through the meat grinder, and hey, maybe they DON'T survive! I'm with you on the motivation part, but of course that still falls flat for me when it's nearing of century of the same character going nowhere without end. I get the myth aspects, I understand the simple morality plays, it remains low dimension and unappealing to me. Show me the story of the goth girl and why she'd want to jump instead of a cry for help to receive the super man's hug.
I don’t think it’s fair to lump him in with the latest lazy writer’s Mary Sue character.
And I disagree. We don't need to get into the weeds of wish fulfillment vs idealized self or whatever. I understand you guys place more value and already have that emotional connection to Superman that I lack and I'll leave it there. The 1000s of Action Comics, or Detective Comics, are definitely not for me.
