Touchdown Football (IBM PCjr, 1984)
[quote name="Ice Cream Jonsey"]Mobygames link I bought a new old stock PCjr joystick a few months ago. It doesn't work reliably. I think it needs ... I dunno, a drop of oil or something. If you press the stick down and then let it center, it turns the calibration dials out of whack. So instead I bought the cheapest one I could find - depicted in the photo - and it works great. I am sure that is a metaphor for something. The game itself IS football, in a way that, save for the Intellivision, I can't remember seeing at the time. You have two options for passing (it uses the two buttons that the PCjr joystick offers, for your left or right receiver) running plays, formations, interceptions, field goals, punts. There is a cheerleader that appears when you score and a ref when there is a turnover (and I think when you get a first down). There are audibles, and you can pick your play without your opponent seeing it. Advanced stuff for 1984. It offers a head to head mode, a single player mode and you can also watch the computer play as both teams. It doesn't have timeouts, the game completely pauses when it needs to read the voice sound effects ("End of Quarter!") from the disk. There is no concept of an onside kick, I don't think and all of the stuff that the NFL has done in the years since 1984 like 2 point conversions are, of course, not there. There is no concept of a schedule or playoffs or a league... but it's football. It was a nice trip down memory lane. There are three options for quarter length - 5, 10 and 15. This was nice but 5 minute quarters is MOOOORE than enough. There is no real speedup of time that I could detect, as other games have. When my brother visits me I hope to have another working joystick so we can try this out. I can't say this is a game that is going to have a lot of longevity in my home, but what game does?
