There seems to be some gamer's axiom out here that this kind of meta-progression - where a game starts out impossibly hard but gets easier as you play it more, not just because you get more skilled, but also because the game rewards you with things that make it easier over time - as fundamentally bad, but I'm not sure I agree. Isn't meta-progression more fun than grinding i.e. the extremely standard mechanic where you have to spend a bunch of time killing low-level enemies so that you can level up your in-game character enough to take on tougher challenges? To me, meta-progression is better than grinding, you get more variety in your gameplay. If there's a complaint specific to The Last Spell on this front, it's that when you die at a boss - which you will almost definitely do, a couple of times - you have to go back through the nights leading up to that moment from the beginning with a new party, which takes time. I think The Last Spell does a pretty good job with this, because the unlocks give you some variety and also it gives you the opportunity to play around with different party compositions. The crucial test for me is whether I find those earlier nights to be boring or fun on subsequent runs, and I have gotta say: I have enjoyed all 13 hours I've played of The Last Spell so far, having wiped three times, the last one being at the first town's Harpies boss fight. I know that if I start run 4 on this town, I'm going to tear through the first few nights like a chainsaw through hamburger, but that's alright, I can try some new weapons. That's if I do decide to go again, I dunno.
