Re: What is it and how did it happen
This guy is great btw. I'm no philosophy major, so these kinds of videos are great for me. Anyway, the above is a discussion of the mind/brain identity theory. So the opposite of what I'm bitching about. But check out his Princess Elizabeth objection to Descartes video for some of the silliness of the dualist theory. Basically, the idea is that the Mind is just not explainable by your wacky "science" and is a different thing from the body. Something ineffable, like the Force or something. It's pretty dumb overall. And it's just religion. It literally doesn't matter what supposed objections you have to the idea that your brain is your mind, it's an observable fact (or in the above video, a scientific hypothesis that cannot be disproven just by thinking about it). When the last human dies, so will religion and so will this dumb idea. Because it has no basis outside of the human imagination. Another way of thinking about it (which is what I was doing when I got irritated and wrote that post) is: just because you can say "I have a body" doesn't mean that it's like, a different thing. I have a couch, in fact I have two. Could I have two bodies? I can exist apart from my couch, although most days I don't appear to be able to. Can I exist apart from my body? These are apparently valid questions because they are not LOGICALLY inconsistent. But it's still bullshit, right? Oh well.
