Re: The Backrooms: Survival
OK. Point of order. Pinback, you forgot to mention the most important thing about this game, which is that IT IS A ROGUELIKE! It has procedurally generated everything (including random item drops), crafting, vendors, and the classic "find the exit to the next level / previous level" dynamic. Now, the roguelike approach does make sense thematically for the Backrooms. If you are adamant that you want randomly generated, endless mazes, well... this game has you covered. The problem is that: 1. There is no final goal. In the forums, the developer flat-out admits that you just keep encountering new random levels until you die. Compare with Nethack where you have something to look forward to. Or even many of the other backrooms games. 2. Random levels are kind of boring. They should have done what other roguelikes do, and sprinkled hand-designed levels throughout to add some flavor. 3. The game is balanced such that running away from monsters is always a better choice than fighting them. This is fun the first few times, but quickly gets boring. In a normal roguelike, a big part of the fun is speccing out your character, improving your wepaons and armor, etc. But you mostly shouldn't bother with any of that here. Just hoard healing items and run away from everything. Boom, you've mastered inventory management in The Backrooms: Survival. 4. The levels are very samey, even more so than in a typical roguelike. And since you can only go up or down, it starts feeling linear somehow in the end. In the end, this provided like 2 hours of fun...
