The Backrooms
::
OK I finished the first two "tapes" and no more are available.
The game is split up into episodes and you have to start each "episode" using the new game button. (Perhaps the dev should probably make it clearer that there is more to do after the first tape. I bet a lot of people assumed that when the game brought them back to the main screen, that it was over!) Some annoyances: the game loses my graphics settings each time I exit. Come on, man. Good things: the graphics are consistently good. And the environments are, too. A lot of backrooms games just have like one good level and then they author phones it in for the rest. That isn't the case here. Some of the best levels are way into the game. The best thing about this game is that the dev tries, and succeeds, at telling a coherent story. I think that's what's really missing from the rest of these games. He also has a sense of pacing. Like there's a clear sense of when chase scenes begin and end. There's narrative beats. Like there's a level which is just infinite ocean (seemingly) and the protagonist remarks on this with despair. I think horror games need a story even if it's just a very minimal one. Like Pinback said, just having a bunch of spooooky stuff around and jumpscares makes it a haunted house game, not a backrooms game.
