Dominion
Man, if there's one thing I'm learning from this new hobby, it's to START with the classic games that birthed a genre. Dominion is the original deckbuilder. Everything from Quest for El Dorado to Slay the Spire owe their existence to this game. And it's fucking fantastic! <IMG SRC="https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.karousell.com%2Fmedia%2Fphotos%2Fproducts%2F2023%2F7%2F1%2Fdominion_board_game_1688227061_19c46e64_progressive.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=5da809e86551dfae0037a733b2a3ba31738606310efb9d5805132a64032dd6c1"> The premise is you're a relatively poor medieval lord looking to uplift their land holdings and build a mighty kingdom, but their neighbors have the same idea and it's a mad scramble to buy and upgrade your hand and your lands. You and your opponent are taking turns buying cards from a (random?) market of 10 advanced cards, looking to raise enough money to buy land cards enough to grant you a victory point win. An interesting wrinkle with this game is that land cards are just deadweight in your hand until the end of the game, so buying land can potentially slow you down against your opponents' leaner, more efficient decks. I've got to squee over the box! This is the greatest box of any board game ever. Neat little rows to keep every type of card sorted and organized. And while the picture I used doesn't have it, it also comes with a little index in the center that identifies every card for easy access. This game absolutely has the fastest and most painless assembly and teardown of any board game I've played. So if you want to play a deckbuilder, but don't have anyone who wants to play nerdy violent shit like Star Wars or Aeon's End, Dominions is the perfect choice. 10/10!
