87. Devil Daggers (2016, Windows 10)
87. Devil Daggers Creator: Sorath Genre: First-Person Shooter / Action Year: 2016 Platforms: Windows 10 Mobygames link Available through: Steam [steam id="422970"] This is the "game that knows what it is." I had this at #38 in the series of articles that I did, but mostly group-sourced, for best games of the 2010s decade, but I think it holds up much better than a lot of the ones later in the list. There is something to be said for the pleasure of picking something up and not worrying about taking up too much of your time, or if it can save or if it is going to run well. I have an OLED monitor now and Devil Daggers is the game that most benefits from it. Hardware advances improved the game over time. Your goal is to move forward, get a weapon that shoots some kind of energy from your hand and then stay alive as long as possible. You have skulls that eject from the first monster and then some skulls that have horns on them. The idea is to stay alive, but also shoot the monsters in a key area (a little like The Empire Strikes Back for Atari 2600 or Shadow of the Colossus) to destroy them. I don't think you get any points for that, staying alive is the only thing the game cares about and the timer with how long you have stayed alive on your current run is front and center with the game. A good game is 200 seconds. I think it's held up very well.
