79. Max Payne (2001, Windows 98)
79. Max Payne Creator: Remedy Entertainment Genre: Third-Person Shooter Year: 2001 Platforms: Windows 98 (XP was released later in 2001, so you may recall playing it there.) Mobygames link Available through: Steam [steam id="12140] Max Payne is a masterpiece, no notes. It uses "bullet time," popularized by the movie The Matrix to allow for slow-motion shooting of noir antagonists. It uses comic book panel layouts to advance the story, with voice-overs, and I feel that for what it intends to do, the writing, dialogue and story are pretty good. I like what Remedy brought to the table as Finnish developers working in noir. (I like that they toured New York City and hired bodyguards to do so, for reference photography for Max Payne. I have a memory of someone at OMM giving them shit about it. OK, it was Erik.) There hasn't been a proper shepherding of the franchise since. Last year I had a project where I tried to play one game a week and talk about it, and I chose Max Payne 2 for one of them, I don't think it holds up. They changed Max's look from Sam Lake to a very generic-looking good-looking actor type. Part of the appeal of Max Payne is the "everyman" detail is taken to an extreme. Sam Lake looks like anyone you worked with in an office in the 2000s. Rockstar got involved as a publisher and had to introduce their middleware shitware to Max Payne 3, which was written by the guy that wrote everything in GTA that we don't like around here. The movie has Mark Wahlberg in it. Wahlberg was good in one movie, and the Max Payne movie is not the movie he is good in. There's talk about remaking the first and second game, it seems that started in 2002. If the Matrix hit theaters in early 1999 and Max Payne made it out in 2001, that is two years to make the entire game. Wikipedia says the remakes started 4 years ago. We'll probably get higher velocities from AI any day now. None of this should detract from the original Max Payne!
