Re: Micro Animatrix review

I saw a pirated copy of the full Animatrix the other day. The free ones they put up are middle of the road for the collection. One of the unreleased ones, Matriculated, is eyeball-gougingly awful. Final Flight of the Osiris and World Record are both solid and good. Kid's Story, written by the Wachowskis, redeems the mediocrity that is The Second Renaissance, and also Reloaded.
I've seen 6 of the 9 (hur hur) so far. 2nd Ren part 1, 2nd Ren part 2, Program, and Detective Story are the 4 free ones available on the web. In addition, I saw Last Flight of the Osiris before Dreamweaver and Beyond was on MTV2 (I hang my head in shame to admit to watching that network). The 2nd Renaissance ones are so intensely preachy and ridiculous (in part to contort themselves to the ridiculous Matrix back story as introduced in the first movie). Overall I think they suck. I thought Program was pretty decent: reasonably predictable, but it does build off ideas at least introduced in the 1st movie, and the animation is excellent. Detective Story is very stylized and noirish but ultimately has very little point at all. I wasn't impressed. Also, the 30s-type setting just introduces more questions than it answered, if any part of the Animatrix is supposed to be alt all 'canon' (oh god, verging into Trekkie territory). Are we supposed to believe that there are multiple Matrices with different associate time periods, or is this guy some kind of throw back or what? Last Flight of the Osiris is gorgeously animated (CG) and pretty straightforward. It introduces the idea of Matrix Reloaded. Thumbs up. Beyond is by the guys behind Akira, and is absolutely the most beautifully hand-animated story I've seen in a long while. My favorite so far. So I'd say that 3 out of 6 are okay, 1 is mediocre, and 2 suck. Bitter
