I'm watching the American version RIGHT NOW
I'm guessing the original Japanese version takes place in Japan. For the American version, they localized it by having it take place in...Japan...with American leads. Was this to cash in on the Japanophile crowd? My potential enjoyment of this movie was inhibited by watching obnoxiously presented hip white kids worshipping Japanese culture. "I've always wanted to come here!" exlaimes hot Sara Michelle Gellar. Ha ha, no. I'd believe it if she were 150 lbs. heavier, male, and crammed into a Hello Kiddie shirt many sizes too small. Points off for heavy handed exposition littered about the beginning (Gellar going on about how great japan is and taking time to pull her boyfriend over to a buddhist graveyard and explain to him how the smoke from incense carries up prayers to loved ones, which just may come into play later on). More points off for "it was only a cat" scare. Points back for creepy zombie ghost kids. Jumbled timeline.....eh. It's definately not new or clever, more of trying to keep this movie from being a dull straightfoward slasher film (without the gore, and with ghost zombie kids magically popping up out of nowhere instead of a killer in overalls) and barely partially succeeding but too little too late.
