Bujingai (PS2) (Jap)
Japan hurdles towards mid-80's American musical culture, embracing and celebrating the effeminate male pop performer. In our youth we enjoyed Boy George, Spandau Ballet and various glam metal bands. Currently Japan enjoys "Gackt".

Wanting to launch a brand new game franchise, Taito and developer Red Entertainment hired Gackt's likeness for Bujingai's protagonist. After some hot sessions in Adobe Homoshop, the developer came up with the Gackt Bujingai character:

When I first saw Bujingai in action, I thought Taito/Red were blazing a trail, casting a post-teen woman with an achievable bust size as their star character. It turns out that they weren't blazing, so much as flaming. Imagine my relief that I didn't break one off to Gackt under those false pretenses. What I did mastubate to was the gameplay. Bujingai is like the recently updated Shinobi (or Otogi), except FUN, with the action pacing more akin to Devil May Cry. Can you imagine a fun version of Shinobi?! It sounds great, right?! Trade the red scarf coolness for motion captured double broadsword light-trailed kung-fu forms. Run on walls, flip around, air juggle, rack up combos, and hell, even fly for brief periods of time. I mean WHY NOT?! WHY THE EFF NOT?!?! The story is one that takes place in future China, and is heavily saturated in Chinese mythology and art direction, as far as my round eye can tell. What's more important is that Gackt gets to this parallel Earth by flying through space as a bright blue meteor. He lands, talks with a master/buddy of his, and then has to clean up the bad guys. The triangle button performs a spinning-top 6 hit combo. Now get out there and win back Chinese future Earth, Gackt. Amazing and wild graphic touches, low level scrub zombies baddies, bosses, linear progression with little to no exploration, discovery and collection of trinkets, and settings that range from drab to not very drab. Some of those of points negatives and some are positives. You can sort them according to your personal preferences. What is certainly bad is the "clean up this room, young man" game design crutch that occasionally forces you to wipe out all the baddies before you may gain passage through a magically sealed door. That this doesn't even begin to bother me in Bujingai just proves that my opinion can be bought. The price? Make the game fun to play.
