Re: Xenosaga 3: Also Sprach Zarathustra (that title is very meaningful)
I was wondering when you'd be all over this. I can't believe the critical acclaim this game is receiving, primarily because 1) it is less awful than II and 2) it ends the series. I think you'd really get a kick out of the "summary" of the story + multiple page glossary that's in the strategy guide. It's a summary of the summary in the game, and I would challenge anyone to be able to produce any sort of timeline for any stage in this game's story after reading it. I played through all of I, and I still have no fucking clue what this game is about. Then you'd really be tickled by the helpful database in the game. It is Oblivionesque in its scope, and probably even more worthless (I don't know, I refuse to read that much in a game). But most of all, you'd be blown away by the intro, that shows all kinds of crazy mech combat and flashy sci fi shit, only to drop you in an awesome preview of all of the gameplay to follow. Namely, walking down hallways, hitting x periodically to pointlessly blow shit up in your path, until you have yet another nonrandom encounter that works just like a regular rpg's random encounters, but YOU CAN SEE THEM IN FRONT OF YOU AND YOU HAVE TO WALK INTO THEM SO IT'S BETTER AND NOT TEDIOUS. Every time they try to break this convention you end up with Xenosaga or, god forbid, Magna Carta....we'll see if FFXII can break that pattern. Anyhow, once again the cutscenes go into all kinds of detail on what awesome things do happen in this game, but only to reinforce that you will never do any of them yourself. Fuck. I couldn't just be happy with Disgaea II, I had to go and do this to myself. Everyone who rated this game professionally and recommended it should just embrace their inner retard and go work for Play already.
