The Nintendo DS
As I get older, I find myself with less and less time to devote to uninterrupted full on gaming sessions. What this means is that it takes me a week to get through HL2:Ep1 and that most of my gaming time is stolen in ten minute increments. Under these limitations, I dig on a couple quick rounds of UNO or Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved or UMK3 on XBLA. Shit, it's hard for me to find the time for a single full game of Lumines. My criteria focus on getting as much fun as possible from a standing start and being able to drop it all at a moment's notice. The Nintendo DS, far and away, meets and exceeds these expectations. I could arbitrarily pick out a single game and crown it my game of the year, but the truth is that the breadth and depth of the DS's offerings this year absorbed the vast majority of my gaming time. I went three months or so without even turning my PSP on, much less playing a game on it, but somehow I've ended up with two DS Lites and a ton of highly entertaining games. Even the brutal missteps (I'm looking at you, StarFox Command) are worth a spin for the novelty factor alone. Three great DS games this year in no particular order: 1) Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin 2) Elite Beat Agents 3) Kirby Squeak Squad New Super Mario Bros stunk of planned obsolescence. Final Fantasy III was fuckin Final Fantasy. And StarFox fuckin Command made you fuckin fly with the motherfuckin stylus.
