<i>Serenity was really good. This means Fussbett was finally right about something. Good job, Fussbett!</i> My first thoughts were about how the TV cast has aged. None of the women are as attractive as I remember them - the engineer is too skinny and something seems wrong with the hooker's face. On the other hand, the men are all buffer than I remember them, even the magical negro, who here might as well be a space footballer as a space priest. Speaking of space professions, I always thought Firefly suffered from a few too many characters who were more-or-less defined by their roles - the pilot, the doctor - or who felt like they were just there for Wild West flavour - the preacher, the whore. Joss Whedon has wisely trimmed the fat with this, what he probably hoped would be the first in a series of movies, by killing off half of them and re-distributing their few interesting characteristics among the ones who remain (the doctor is now In A Shipboard Romance, for example). But none of the characters in this movie are boring, as they could occasionally be on the series. Shepherd Book (best name for a preacher since Jesus McBible) only has two scenes, while Inara keeps her trap shut and her blouse open (according to the DVD, all of her important scenes were left on the cutting room floor when the editors realized her part was written for a much more attractive actress). Pacing was good in general. IMDb claims it ran a respectable 119 minutes, but 93-94 sounds more like it to me. One day, with the twin benefits of hindsight and nostalgia, Serenity might find its way into my Top 5 Outer Space Movies with 2001 and the Holy Trinity of sci-fi sequels (<i>Empire Strikes Back, Wrath of Khan, Aliens</i>). But it'll likely face stiff competition from boring old Solaris and that one where some poor slut has to choose between a naked Harvey Keitel and a genital-shredding robot, since by then I'll have probably gotten around to actually watching them. I think I'm going to buy the Firefly Season 1 (ha) DVD on Welfare Wednesday for the few episodes I haven't already seen, then I can read the rest of this thread. Maybe I'll also pick up Buffy where I left off, in whichever season she goes to college - does it get better or worse from there?
