Long Awaited MGS4 Review: Negative

[01:11] Motherhead: though I will never sit through a 1+ hour cutscene, ever. [01:11] Motherhead: unless it's a Coen brothers game of some kind. [01:13] HIDEOHUGGER: to put it mildly, it's not [01:13] Motherhead: well put. [01:14] HIDEOHUGGER: At one point, a crucial conflict is settled in a dance off between one gay guy who does flamenco style and a cyborg ninja who retorts via breakdancing. [01:15] HIDEOHUGGER: that is one of the high points [01:15] Motherhead: ... [01:15] Motherhead: jesus christ, why? [01:15] Motherhead: I mean japanese culture in general. [01:16] HIDEOHUGGER: Well, fortunately Kojima included 15 hours of cutscenes and codecs to address that concern. As well as a free downloadable database to break it down systematically [01:16] HIDEOHUGGER: but as to the existential why [01:16] HIDEOHUGGER: I can't help you [01:17] HIDEOHUGGER: the ending boss fight (and subsequent 3.5 minutes) is probably one of the best I've seen in recent years [01:17] HIDEOHUGGER: but you need a bullshit tolerance of truly epic proportions to get there and be in a position to enjoy it [01:20] Motherhead: yeah, it certainly sounds that way. my exposure to Jpop-rpg-mg ranges from "infuriatingly inscrutable" to "this is a Berlin homosexual cabaret circa 1929 as envisioned by a committee of japanese deviants." [01:21] HIDEOHUGGER: that experience will prove invaluable in failing to enjoy MGS4 [01:22] Motherhead: I guess if I hate it with all my heart I can send it to INC so he can throw it away without playing it. [01:23] HIDEOHUGGER: I think you might be able to salvage the experience if you skip cutscenes liberally, whenever it's clear that a codec conversation or a sepia toned documentary sequence follows at the least [01:24] HIDEOHUGGER: the controls are the best in the series, the ideal marriage of MGS2's simple yet empowering weirdness and MGs3's painfully encumbering variety
I could go on, but none of it would make a difference. The fact is they had the controls and the basic concepts to produce an RE4 caliber reboot of the series, and opted instead for never saying no to a single moment of Kojima self indulgence and fanservice. The result is messy and difficult to love for fans that don't implement an extensive regimen of self-loathing into their daily routines, and practically impossible for newcomers to get through. Fuck this game, fuck the PS3, and fuck me for being almost done with my third playthrough.
