I'm only posting five.
1. High Windows by Philip Larkin. The poems that got me into poetry. 2. The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad. A kind of obvious pick, but Conrad captures different characters, ideologies, and their motivations with an incisive fidelity that is beyond comparison. 3. The Sharks by Jens Bjorneboe. Bjorneboe tempers his relentless misanthropy with a stunning story about being on a boat, being white, and trying to be good. 4. Momo by Michael Ende. Flawless and hateful fable about how important it is to be happy. Magical turtle. Evil Capitalist Oppressors that subsist on our lives get undone. 5. A Feast of Snakes by Harry Crews. Incredibly gritty, alcoholic, and gay. The pages where some toughguy redneck characters take a nerd for a cruel ride in their car are legendary. Deeply sexual in an aggressive and cloying way.
