Anyway, that whole show was suddenly revealed to be WWII refought as a cartoon. One super ship can still win it for us! If only . . . ! Don't you remember the first episode or two when they pull it off the dried out sea bed? All the oohing and aahing, even by the aliens, at how huge and wonderful it was? TRY NOT TO SMACK YOUR FOREHEAD, I DARE YOU.
Star Blazers is great to see again, for this reason. Being older and knowing Japanese feelings towards WWII gives everything a more interesting layer. Like the first time they fire the Wave Motion Gun, after powering it up for about 3 minutes (powering other things down, closing the valves, donning bomb test goggles, general SHOO-KLAXing) they blow an entire "floating continent" to pieces, aiming only at the Gamilon base. Afterwards they're all rattled by this awesome power and the Admiral gives a speech about how they learned a valuable lesson today. They must treat this overpowered weapon with respect and use their power carefully because it's a great responsibility. Like don't fire it at Hiroshima. MEANWHILE THOUGH the Gamilon leader is like "Gamilon Base? Hello? HOLY JESUS THEY BLEW UP THE WHOLE CONTINENT!!! THEY HAVE A SUPERWEAPON CHRIST WE'RE FUUUUUCKED!" which is an effective pro-atomic bomb argument too! As much as the Japanese made Star Blazers anti-WWII, they mostly just wanted to be on the winning side for once.
Plus everyone is running around in bellbottom unitards and the previously mentioned disco (actually funk more often)! Also it's good to watch the American edit and remember that the doctor is a drunk in the Japanese version. On the downside, it's very slowly paced for our MTV, TV dinner, cable TV lack of patience. Just launch the fucking Black Tigers and fire the Wave Motion Gun to clean up whatever is left ALREADY. Verdict: download. |
