The last hour is worse.
For a while I thought it was about to get better as the "body bomb" subplot started to form. What everyone likes about the initial bombs scenes struck me as almost horror movie tension, and it was scored very similarly too. And now some crazy Iraqi is killing children and hiding C4 in there? Crazy shit, this is a horror movie set in Iraq! Let's get that motherfucker! But then that fell apart, and I realized the only reason for the body bomb tangent was to show how our bomb guy is so devoted and passionate and crazy, he'll do reckless things to stop bad guys. And maybe the body bomb tangent was to make the next scenes more believable: 3 man bomb squad raids a huge compound alone, using the tactic of "let's split up". Were we supposed to like the hero at this point? I guess not, because the scene after that shows us he's wrong about Beckham, and how his squaddie hates him because he's going to have a leg cast for 6 months. That's the downside of all that reckless behaviour: one broken leg. What a pussy out.
The best/worst scene in the whole movie comes at the end when the bomb guy is confronted with too many cereal choices in the supermarket. He can't fucking believe how many cereals there are! It's a metaphor for how he no longer fits into society because he's so used to defusing bombs, see. I know the Iraq occupation has been long, but can we assume he remembers that there are a lot of fucking cereal brands back home? He wasn't thawed out of a block of ice, he was gone for 2 years or whatever.
Anyway, the moral of the movie is that Iraq sucks, being a bomb defuser turns you into a maniac and the British SAS are completely incompetent fuck-ups. |
