One of the most interestingly wrong-headed arguments that icycalm ever made is in this thread, in which he treats seriously of the end of art and history (as premised by Jean Baudrillard), then wends its way into the thoughtless minimalism of all art after La Toilet De Duchamps.

It is of course a completely trivial exercise to disprove this sloppy train of thought. Anyone who wants to can find non-minimal and completely alive art being made in any town anywhere in the world - even, I assure you, in Lyon. In the same way, it is trivial to understand that history is continuing to happen and to be recorded as history. Just because a famous French person said something - it doesn't change the nature of reality!

Baudrillard - an unworthy philosopher, but an amazing work of provocation, a crystallization of a particular type of forum nihilist - makes his argument in the same way that icycalm typically makes arguments: first, pick a lame definition for a commonly used term (art = cubist paintings). Second, use the commonly used term (art) as though it meant what it means commonly (i.e. expressive works of humans) while treating it within the context of your argument as though it meant what your retarded definition states (art = cubist paintings.) Third, make an unthinkably inaccurate argument based on this etymological feint.

In other words: it's a strawman argument. When Baudrilliard makes it, it is interesting because he is doing this thing that a lot of young arrogant men do, and he is doing it better than almost anyone ever has. It's like watching the world's most beautiful hamster perfectly run on its perfect hamster wheel.

Anyway the upshot of all this is that strawmen come easily to a certain kind of thinker - like, for example, you. They come easy because you guys seriously believe that you ought to be able to understand everything, so any kind of explanation that you don't understand must be untrue. Baudrillard's definition of art and the deadness of art are easy; real art, its aliveness, its motivations and messages, are much more complex than you would ever want to bother with. Therefore: art is dead.

So too with your clumsy bad-talkin' friend analogy. Of COURSE it's correct, therefore of COURSE it completely describes the phenomenon you're observing. Therefore Caltrops and the bad-talkin' friend can be treated the same way. They are functionally the same thing. Sympathetic magic!
