Yes, extremely unsatisfying game by FABIO 04/29/2009, 8:07pm PDT
The problem with chess is when you're starting out, there are only 3 levels of play:

- Complete casual neophyte
- Beginner who's trying to learn by getting down a few basic strategies
- Assholes who devote hundreds of hours into studying game histories then reverse engineer them and play themselves.

As a casual player, who can only hope to have an even match with other casual beginners which will be a contest of whoever randomly makes less obvious fuck ups.

The big problem comes once you've reached your stage in nailing down basic strategies. Your choice of opponent is very limited. You're not going to find too many other people who have just reached stage 2 at any given time, and the neophytes that you can beat are the ones least interested in playing; at most you'll get ot beat them in one game before they move on to something more fulfilling like going out and getting laid.

Your only choice after that is to quit or devote yourself to stage 3, which is the chess equivalent of scoring a perfect on every Guitar Hero expert level song. Most people (correctly) realize that the time investment is much better spent learning an actual instrument or a billion other more productive or enjoyable time sinks.
