Well, probably because they're free to read online and I crave space opera real bad these past two months (see also: My Steam log for how long I've been playing Sword of the Stars this past weekend).
Lets go through the checklist: Minor spoilers below as if you gave a fuck:
- Has a fucking empathic, sentient six-legged pet cat that's draped around her neck like a fucking boa at almost all times that is apparently the only exception in the world to Navy regulations that you can't have any goddamn pets because they're so prolific and they'll die like a Star Wars Ysalarami if abandoned by the one they "bond" with. However she's the only character you ever see with one. So in reality, the Queen has given her and her alone special exception to be the only ship captain with a cat draped around her neck.
- Is a millionaire by the end of the first book from the prize money for interdicting a single smuggling freighter.
- In the second book, is given the governorship of the southern continent on a planet of Space Mormons who were only recently integrated into the larger interstellar community and wouldn't give her the time of day. Then is subsequently given title as a Countess. I understand she saved their planet, but jesus come on.
- Weeaboo (Half)
- Unusually tall and strong for a female, though it passes this off as due to her being from a planet with higher gravity and a tougher climate
- Is attractive, but thinks she's ugly and is very naive about sex and cosmetics up until midway through book 3
- Was sexually assaulted at Academy but beat the living dogshit out of her attempted rapist, but because of his position as land-owning gentry and her relative obscurity he was given nothing more than a slap on the wrist
- Everyone who has some dislike of her usually winds up wrong on key strategic decisions, is a complete coward, or an asshole
- Everyone who likes her is a strategic genius or a likeable person
When she's sitting in the captain's chair or blowing shit up she's a great character and the books are a fairly good read but whenever they're between huge battles and focusing on her personal life she's about the most uninteresting person ever and I keep rolling my eyes while I'm reading it.
