Bad albums, Scott Walker. by Zseni-chan 01/20/2005, 11:22pm PST
Wolfscheim - Spectators. Gay, and not in a fun way. Gay in a contrived way. I got a lot of smoke blown at me about this cabaret synthpop revival, and I think Pitchfork even invoked Scott Walker (which is the invocation to make these days.) Much was made of the sincerity of the dude's singing voice. It's awful, the songwriting doesn't compensate for the awful voice, and Scott Walker hates dance music to boot. The Dinky album "Black Cabaret" is everything Spectators was advertised as being, including "good."

Black Dice - Creature Comforts. Not everything DFA touches is fun. Sometimes it's tedious regurgitated IDM.

Coming back to Scott Walker, I see his name attached to every white boy who throws a fey literary reference next to a glam guitar line. Which is ridiculous not just because it's wrong, but because every single time what these jackass reviewers mean is "he's like a gayer Momus." I'm going to make another law here:

Any music critic under 55 years of age who describes a new album using Scott Walker as a touchpoint is either:
1. Wrong.
2. Confused; he means Momus.
3. Stupidly insensitive to music, or
4. Profoundly sensitive to critiques of his hipness
