Here are some things I thought FO1-2 did better by Arbit 07/08/2009, 4:33pm PDT
- Humor/dialogue. Most of the dialogue in FO3 was of the *clickclickclickclick* YES YES HURRY UP AND ISSUE MY QUEST THANK YOU variety. I did enjoy the gate guard at the slaver camp, though - I was doing the usual inquisition routine, when suddenly he calls me an asshole and tries to kill me! I didn't pick an option to piss him off, he just got tired of me. Unexpected, and a good touch.
- Challenge. I was able to take on super mutants around level 7 with just basic hunting rifles, shotguns, and grenades. Killing a tougher enemy was mostly a matter of how much patience you had for VATSing them in the head and then waiting for your APs to recharge, or how many grenades you were willing to pitch at them. Power armor equipped soldiers didn't seem any harder to kill than mutants, and you could kill them with the assault rifle fairly easily (ridiculous).
- Atmosphere. I think the lack of challenge and the shitty loot really cut into this. Super mutants and other bad guys just aren't as menacing when they're so easily dispatched. Some of the vaults have neat stories behind them, but cracking open a heavy protected safe only to find the same selection of randomly generated loot you find in every other safe is just fucking lame. Additionally, energy weapons and power armor don't confer the sense of coolness and badassery that they should. The power armor sounds like you're walking around in a suit of CHAINMAIL! *RAGE*

And a few non FO1-2 related whines
- Character animations. Typical Bethesda stiff, wooden, crappy animations. I've come to realize that this riles me up more than other people for some reason. The contrast between the highly detailed world and my character fucking skating sideways whenever I move forward and strafe just looks horrendously stupid.
- DLC. Buggy as fuck! Sometimes it refuses to load up. Crashes got so bad during OP Anchorage that I just gave up.

Now, I liked the game (despite all that). But it doesn't quite stack up to the earlier games in my mind.
