Installing a fresh OS onto a laptop by Fullofkittens 08/04/2009, 4:54am PDT
A couple of months ago, I purchased a laptop, and it was mostly for work/school but I privately had some hope that I would be able to use it for music stuff on occasion. This has not turned out to be the case, because the laptop came with what seems to be the worst OS in the world: Windows Vista 64.

Things that do not work with Vista 64:
Midisport 2x2 midi interface
Midiman 8x8s midi interface
ak.sys (Akai S5000 usb control program)
Expresscard drivers that add firewire capability to connect my Presonus Firepod.

So I guess music making is out.

Web research indicates that some or maybe even all of these problems would be resolved if I installed Vista 32. So the question is: there's a lot of power management, touchpad, etc shit that came on this laptop that would not be part of the regular Vista install. How would I get those back onto the laptop? Will it even work with a regular Vista install?

Note that - as is usual these days - the laptop did not come with a CD of drivers or anything. The restore stuff sits on an invisible partition on the disk.
