I'm beta-testing Gratuitous Space Battles and the designer is looking to overhaul what people are calling the "Metagame," essentially unlockables and how you go about unlocking them. I have always been of the opinion that unlockables serve two purposes:
1. They provide an incentive for people renting console games to purchase their own copy.
2. They extend the life of, and provide a false air of depth to shitty, shallow games.
Much to my surprise, when I came down hard on the concept of unlockables, the forum erupted with people saying they love buying a crippled game and complained that it was too easy to unlock all the ship components. Have my ears gone mad? |
