| I cannot imagine what the books must be like, if the show is still this histrionic after being filtered through a man. The author keeps telling us the women are all strong and intelligent and capable, but they explode into tears every third scene. The inane dramas between Sookie and everyone else are overlapping and unrelenting -- she breaks apart over some imagined transgression, then gets furious at another character for not appreciating her wrenching heartaches on a deep level, then fumes offscreen before issuing a nonapology.
The pilot was pretty good, but every show since gets worse and worse with the cockteasing. They make a point of ending episodes in the middle of something exciting. The season finale did this in a totally unnecessary fashion, introducing a brand new intrigue just before the cut. Have some self-esteem, storytellers! Even within a single show, it's standard to interrupt an action scene and cut to Sookie going "how can I ever trust you again after blah blah blah wall of text" *explodes into tears* *runs away*. "Sookie! SOOOOOOKIE!" *frown* There are some bright points, but most of the dialogue sucks shit. If someone were to say, "I have important news," a sane person would respond "OK," instead of "not now, I just want to kiss. Let me find out your important news by happenstance and then get pissed off about your 'deception'?" SPOILERS: Through the first half of season one, I wondered why Rene was such a minor character, when he's the only male who isn't mentally infirm, castrated, or undead. When they contrived that ridiculous "I'll have to fax his picture" plot point at the end of s1, it was obvious the fax would be someone we knew and that it would go unread, and then it dawned on me that the killer could only be Rene (reasons above). The "climactic showdown" with the killer is awful, horrible writing. Sookie clubs the killer with an unloaded shotgun, then (with killer incapacitated on ground) runs away instead of hitting him again. She tosses the gun in the bushes, then runs halfway to the Vampire's house (he lives just across the cemetery from her) and hides in a freshly dug grave. Bill tries to save her but is getting burned (sunlight) from the moment he comes out of the basement. Why the fuck wouldn't Bill have drapes in his house? |
