but - as a non-doctor - that didn't look like bad advice to me.

My advice to you is to take some antihistamine (a la Benadryl) and see if that affects it, it sounds like an allergic reaction to me. Maybe to a spider bite you didn't notice? Or poison ivy/oak that got on you somehow?

Or you could, you know, call a doctor.
