but ended up buying it on a steam sale after already beating it on normal as a rental for xbox. The game didn't hold up quite as well in a second playthrough on hard, especially with the repetitive, attrition-based boss patterns that got a little old at times, but I can't say there are many games of this length and type I'll ever play all the way through more than once.
The fighting is really, really good. The sneaking is not terrible, putting it at the high end of the stealth genre as well. And the story is lots of Batman bullshit, which means the mandatory blend of a charismatic Joker and a Batman you want to choke out with his own fucking cape and leotard. The sequel is supposed to be about Two Faces, although it seems obvious that Joker will be all over that shit as well.
Some things that made the game a lot better the second time around: it took me a more than a little bit to figure out what the limits were for reaching Riddler areas before you find the right equipment, and it drove me OCD crazy for a while as I tried desperately to find just the right angle for a jump. IIRC, the progression of items goes
1. Thing that gets rid of cracked walls within reach
2. Thing that opens vents that are out of reach OR device that gets rid of electricity doors (I recommend both upgrades for this as soon as possible as they open more doors and remove obstacles a lot more quickly)...I can't remember which comes first.
3. Thing that lets you zipline long horizontal distances.
4. Thing that removes out of reach cracked walls.
No 2a and 4 both have tremendous utility in combat, especially when it comes to opportunities to pull enemies in the way of impending doom. They are a reliable combo placeholder along with the dodge so long as you are facing anything near an enemy, and pulling motherfuckers off a balcony never gets old. Never. |
