That comic seems to assume the mission was to bring the goddam thing home. But that was never the mission, ever. It's life didn't begin until it drove off the landing pad, and it's life will end up there, exactly according to plan. But in XKCD's twisted imagination, we should have hoped it would die after 90 days instead of the long and interesting life it ended up with.
