I was ready to debate her debating style, not that I care about Lovecraft one way or the other, but then by the end I became unsure of what exactly was her point. It started out in the "Guy Who Hated Porn" vein, where she notes the rampant popularity Lovecraft enjoys, but points out that it's for the wrong reasons, and we're all doing it wrong, and we shouldn't like it at all. Then she gets into Lovercraft's possible racism (to think of someone as racist in the 1930s chills me to the bone!) and I was really gearing up, crackling my knuckles over the keyboard. But then it ends with her marvelling at Lovercraft's awesome insanity and unwholesome writing that is great fun to read? Well, someone call Bruce Sterling; "Crazy guy makes weird but interesting art". |
