Michief Maker says it's possibly the most beloved indie game of all time, icycalm recognizes it as a sacred cow and reflexively attacks it. Whatever, it's just some Metroid-ish game that doesn't even feature Metroid-style exploration. You pretty much go from start to finish, killing stuff in a platformy world. And it's good. Though I barely ever heard of it except from the aforementioned dudes, I suspect it's overrated--the fighting is too easy to be deeply interesting, the engine is nothing new, and the story is lightweight. But all of these aspects of it are executed so smoothly and charmingly that the game is well worth playing anyway, unless you've got the ghost of Nietzsche whispering bile into your ear and cannot enjoy simple things in a straightforward fashion.
In the Japanese style, the game also contains some obscure secrets that you will never find on your own unless you play through at least twice and try very hard, on a later playthrough, to avoid gaining character upgrades that would seem to make the game easier. (You can't do this on the first playthrough, even if you're so hardcore as to actually try it, because the game doesn't always tell you when it's about to provide such an upgrade.) This is very stupid, but after I played I spoiled all the secrets via YouTube and found that they did not make the game very much more substantial. So, screw them. The poopsocking-free version of the game is good enough. |
