About 6 months ago, things worked out so that the winners of the Oceania division had to play the winners of the Middle East division for a single place at the world cup. New Zealand won Oceania and Bahrain won the ME, and I was at Bahrain stadium for the decisive qualifing game.
A bomb was set off in the carpark during the NZ national anthem and we were told that if NZ won, for our saftey we'd be locked inside the visitors' section (surrounded by barbed wire) until police deemed it safe enough for us to leave. This, along with Kiwi indifference towards football, and an annoucement from the King that if Bahrain won we'd get two days off to celebrate, meant almost no one rooted for the Kiwis and I pretended to be Australian.
It was a 0-0 draw. |
