I don't think that's a big secret or anything... it says it on his About page! I guess he stole the "mine" part, and added the "craft" part... and also the dynamic liquid blocks and plant blocks and such? The dynamism is the main thing that makes it interesting to me. I mean, not the weird switches and doors and mine carts he's been putting in... that stuff is cool, but it's clumsy to work with, because you have to manually place every tiny piece of every mechanism. But blundering into a hidden pool of lava, and then getting to decide whether to carefully build a path that avoids it, or guide it down into the next cave and use it as an extremely hazardous skeleton-extermination tool, is awesome. More block-based entities that feel alive without requiring the player to do lots of exacting work would be great, and I think maybe mostly new for video games! I don't know of any other games that feel like 3D cellular automata, anyway. Of course every roguelike is something like a 2D cellular automaton, and you can mine around freely in some of those games too.
