No, Total War has interactive battles by Bananadine 10/08/2010, 8:01pm PDT
I only played Shogun but Wikipedia says Medieval does too. Real-time, interactive battles amongst hundreds of units are too slow, and too immensely complex, for me to play with them. They feel like homework--I don't see a clear path toward learning all the subtle differences amongst the troop types and the formations and whatever else, and anyway it seems that no matter what I choose, it'll probably just end up a big mess of similar-looking soldiers flailing at each other, with the larger group probably winning. I can make it become that, at any rate, via machinations in the much easier to understand part of the game that plays out on the big 2D map; and I can make my side generally be the larger one, too. So why practice at the real-time battles, unless I'm gonna be up against a human? And I'm probably not gonna play with a human, because both people have to participate at the same time for a real-time game to work, and that is infeasible for a lengthy war game unless you're at a LAN party or you have a highly dedicated friend or something. So I just end up finding the most easily discovered hole in the idiot AI's skill set and exploiting that until I've conquered the whole map.

In Dominions you just program your dudes and send them out and watch what happens. You do as much work per turn as in Civilization but then as many interesting things happen as in an hour's worth of a version of Total War where there are catoblepases.
