Keys are interesting by Lizard_King 11/11/2010, 3:40pm PST
I'd say it's better than I expected, but it's going to be hit or miss with people who have actual skill already with piano. They are going to be pissed at the 2 octave limit and the way the notes go in the wrong direction sometimes when they run out of keys. I don't think the note charts are going to adapt for a full keyboard when the midi adapter comes out, so it may be a permanent deal-breaker for some.

For people that don't know how to do shit, though, it's fantastic. You have to start with an easy song that isn't boring (for instance, Just Like Heaven/The Cure) and work through the main parts on Pro/Hard in practice mode, which gives you enough of a slowdown that most anyone can do it without dropping tons of keys or getting rid of the track sliding that medium and easy avoid (the side to side movement on the keys, since it only shows half onscreen).

The controller is certainly the best first gen plastic instrument this type of game has ever had, and possibly one of the most high quality overall. I don't like the touch whammy thing, but it's not vital to gameplay for people that aren't Scoreheroes. I strongly recommend the official keyboard stand: having it stay perfectly still at the right height while standing is by far the most flexible position for learning imo.

The track list is ample and diverse, and the first few batches of DLC have been very good (especially the Doors pack, even if I can't play it for shit). I wanted to wait for the Squier to get this originally, but the keys sold me on it. I'd argue there's more gameplay diversity and stuff to work on in a single tier of pro keys than any preceding entire game; only expert drum players were close. Recommended (for music noobs). Big fucking asterisk for more experienced types.
