Not long after the start of my latest session, my colony of four starving, miserable, insane dwarves was relieved by about fifteen migrants. At that point, I wished for there to be a tragic scene wherein the newcomers slowly explored the stinking, corpse-riddled fortress they had found. But instead they just hauled out the corpses (they certainly knew where to put them, having first come onto the map right next to Corpse Stockpile #9) and happily began fishing. I got them to fish!!! I had tried this several times in the past, with no success. The breakthrough came when I read the page in the wiki about fishing and learned that fish aren't edible until they've been cleaned at a fishery. WELL THANKS FOR TELLING ME GAME anyway I pretty easily set up a fortress-wide fishing industry, and by the time the canal up the mountain finally reached the room whose floor I wanted to farm, I didn't even need more food. Still, farming seems to be more efficient than fishing so I flooded the room and shut off the flood and started a nice plump helmet crop! (Plump helmets are plants I guess.)
Right after the flood, the following was to be found at the bottom of my fortress' long stairway:
Zuglar Atulineth's left eye tooth
Limul Rithluturvad's corpse
Muddy limestone Upward Slope
Water [1/7]
A smear of cat blood
A dusting of mud
It took me a while to realize that the cat whose suffocation had recently been announced was the owner of both the blood smear and the name Limul Rithluturvad. I guess it was somebody's pet. Sorry, somebody!
In other news:
Jeweler Feb Kakdalatis, who likes "the color pine green, spears, and green devourers for their bizarre appearance", flipped out and took over a jeweler's workshop (made of charcoal) that I'd built for him because he'd flipped out. He created Duzneth, "a aventurine animal trap". Then he immediately ran to the dormitory and collapsed on a bed.
A kitten succumbed to infection.
At least one dwarf considers the dining room to be "legendary". |
