So the obvious takeaway here is that the shortcoming of analytic philosophy killed DFW. By studiously ignoring social/political context, analytic philosophy has ensured that it will only have stupid and depressing ideas about language. Too bad for poor DFW.
It's funny that Kennick was the prof to whom he was close enough to borrow an office from. When I took a class from him he seemed deeply opposed to the idea that English was a living language. Maybe that was a sign of his commitment to analytic philosophy. Maybe it was just because he was so fucking old. My adviser's adviser took classes from that guy. |
