motorized chumtoad, equipped with head flashlight
in the original version it was just a chumtoad that very slowly hopped along the path through this maze of filing cabinets, now it's got a boat motor so it moves a lot faster making this scene in the game way less arduous and painful
one of the funny moments of the game, a chainsaw floating in the air spinning in place ala doom (yes, you get to carve up zombies and dinks with a chainsaw)
two obvious improvements granted by the sauce engine in this screencap: the significantly improved AI which follows you through areas much more tightly and quickly, and the little water splashes around their feet
in the original version you couldn't even get this many people into one hallway
there's a lot of good dialog sequences and stuff in this
the voice acting is extremely cheap but then this is a "survival horror" game ala the RE games so that's not too out of bounds
really, the atmosphere in the game is excellent, the maps are very expertly designed (aside from being extremely large and confusing due to their hub system)
they go from scary aliens to hoohoo funny humor constantly, but it's all really well done so it doesn't really feel like I'm gonna get emotional whiplash from the change of atmospheres
this is also one of the very few vietnam based anythings that actually acknowledges war crimes committed by the NVA, so for me it scores some massive points in that department
I beat the game yesterday but there's still a few things I want to try, like carrying my massive army of special forces soldiers through more of the maps (I usually left them in one place where they could cluster together and defend an area while I went ahead and cleared out the more dangerous enemies)
one of the things I did try was getting my friendly AI grunts onto the boat leading to the final chapter, which I remember trying to do years ago when I played the original hl1 version and it was nearly impossible. it's still hard as dick to get them inside the boat because they don't have node paths and the area is extremely cramped, but with proper use of the squad movement key and a lot of patience I got about 10 guys into the PTR's lower deck |
