I've been wanting to impotently nerd rage over stats for a long long time because they're one of the genre conventions of RPGs that need to almost altogether up and fucking die already as far as the player is concerned. They're useful as a programmer for representing game data, but as a player they just obscure useful information behind arbitrary conversions. And then beardy names are attached to make sure they're understood by fucking nobody. So seeing things like "cunning" and "brutality" make me want to roll barbarian and hope your house fails a saving throw against me punching it over.
The original design doc called for "JEWISHNESS" and "NON-JEWISHNESS" but yes, there's much better terms to use. Not to kill off the thread, but "Chance to Hit" is brilliant and specifying the damage range is something I hadn't considered. I was just going to put "DAMAGE: 12" up on the screen, like a moron. It will instead say "DAMAGE: 4-12" going forward.
attackadjust: Chance to hit/Hit Chance/something telling me this is going to increase a monster's chance to hit me
You bring up a good point here. Right now, the stats of your guys are part of the GUI when a fight goes down. I was only going to include the current number of hit points for enemies. Should I put their stats there to? If you saw that influenza had a Damage Range of 1-11 would that be a good addition, good information to give to the player? I am willing to display the exact same stats for the enemies as I am for the player's monsters.
Basically I just want a character sheet to be as plain and straightforward as possible. Maybe I'm alone on this, but it's not going to break my immersion if it's easier to understand what your game is trying to tell me.
I agree with you completely -- more than any other genre, text games in 2011 should be the player's friend. If I could help people move or take them to the airport while they played, I would do so.

Wargames can afford to be open about their mechanics because they actually have by some. RPGs don't have that luxury. 03/21/2011, 2:10pm PDT
