haha, this is the greatest thing I've ever seen. It explains all the problems with adventure games and RPGs in 2011 in an amazingly succinct way. I can't get over how incredible this is.

They really can't find people to write for these games who have a passing interest in RPGs? You hear nothing but stories about how difficult it is to get a job making games, and here's BioWare waving through people who'd be happier reading Dragonlance and watching The Crow than making something new and fun while taking advantages of the unique advantages of games. The tactics were the best part of Baldur's Gate 2 (or: BG2 had the best implementation of party-level tactics in its time). So of course, fuck tactics!

Everything she says reflects a complete and measured ignorance of the very medium she's working in. Expertly so. You couldn't build someone from blueprints that was less qualified to work in videogames:

A fast forward button would give all players -- not just women -- the same options that we have with books or DVDs -- to skim past the parts we don't like and savor the ones we do. Over and over, women complain that they don't like violence, or they don't enjoy difficult and vertigo-inducing gameplay, yet this simple feature hasn't been tried on any game I know of.

One of the characteristics of television is that there is a week-long wait between episodes. One of the characteristics of comic books is that a consumer can spend as much time as they like on an individual panel. One of the characteristics of sculpture is that it will be viewed from all angles, 360 degrees, with people typically looking up at it. And one of the characteristics of the platform of computer games is that you are meant to be actively playing through the content at all times, specifically unable to fucking "fast forward" through it. The point has been made many times before, but if I am reading a book and I start to get bored, but I don't quite want to quit it completely, I can flip ahead a bit. You can fall asleep during a movie, especially if you are my father. This can't be done with games, this shouldn't be done with games, this won't be done with games. But people who are shit-shoveling out this cretinous garbage for cretins haven't the most basic, fundamental understanding of their platform, and see the non-interactive cut-scene as the pinnacle of the video game experience.

And with a baby on the way in a few months, my minimal free time (which makes it impossible for me to finish a big RPG in less than six months already), will disappear entirely. If there was a fast-forward feature on games which would let me easily review the writing and stories and skip the features that I find more frustrating than fun, I'd find it much easier to keep abreast of what's happening in the field.

Werrrrrrll, re-thinking it over, it would be nice if - during the first design meeting for Fallout 4 or The Witcher 3 - everyone came together and decided how many resources will be spent catering to the whims of their unqualifed, incompetent competition who might be having children, especially since cut-scenes don't show up on Youtube in their entirety six months after release.
