So after five years of development and ignoring pretty much every other aspect of my life, I am releasing my game, Cryptozookeeper, on May 30th. We had a discussion here about combat terms, and I wanted to show how it looks in-game after the very useful feedback I got from Caltrops.
So, from left to right up top: Level, Hit Points, Wins, Losses. Then, Speed, "To Hit," Resis and Damage. I'd love "Resistance" to be spelled out completely, but I had to make sacrifices in order to get the game to work at 1024x768, a resolution I doubt anyone actually uses any more.
If you win a fight, you then get to pick a stat to increase. After some number of victories, you increase in level. When you increase in level, you get more hit points, but one of the other attributes also randomly increases by a random amount. (I wrote a lot of combat descriptions, so it's maddening that the goddamn game picks the "install (randomly selected Unix distro)" twice in a row. Nnnngh.
I had three methods for the photos. The globster here was illustrated by my pal J. Robinson Wheeler. A lot of the cryptids, like Big Foot up top, where either put together by me (that's me in the suit, for instance) or I went out and grabbed photos. For the animals like the flu and salamander, I went for public domain photos. If there really weren't any, I would use a Creative Commons-licensed photo, giving proper credit to the photographer in the game's credits. Creative Commons was instrumental in getting this project done.

Wargames can afford to be open about their mechanics because they actually have by some. RPGs don't have that luxury. 03/21/2011, 2:10pm PDT
