This game looks like it's less about building than Minecraft is. Minecraft makes 3D modeling accessible and fun, but 2D drawing is already accessible. But can you control things indirectly? Can you build machines? Are there wires or switches or automatic doors? It looks like building platforms is an important way to get around but it doesn't seem very fun for its own sake.
Videos make it appear that the view is fully in the third person--that is, that things are lit up only according to how exposed they are to light sources, and NOT according to how exposed they are to your character's line of sight. Is that right? The picture of the dudes in the penis room seems to confirm that. So there's never a time when you break a wall and discover, at exactly that moment, that there's lava behind it (or just a big cool cave)? You see things coming up? That'd be a shame. Exploration is fun. But maybe a static 2D room made of head-sized square blocks just can't be complicated enough to be exciting anyway, unless there are unexpected creatures running around in it or something--whereas in 3D, an automatic world generator doesn't have to be very smart to come up with a huge variety of interesting forms, some of which can seem pretty wonderful when you turn a corner or knock out a block and blunder into them.
I guess this game is more about Mario-type acrobatics, cooperative combat, and item collection?
Haven't played Minecraft, I'm frankly a little bit intimidated by it after having watched youtubes of it. This seemed easy. No is also the answer to the wires and switches and stuff. As for blundering into lava and the sight rules: a torch or other light source (mining hat, say) will illuminate the area around you plus a few blocks in through solid walls. So you can see where you're going, unless you're a torch jew like I am and dig until it's almost dark before dropping another one. I've found that the enchanted boomerang can illuminate a deeper area behind the walls if you throw it repeatedly at the walls. Like taking sonar soundings or something. This is very helpful.
Much of this stuff is probably actually very boring but for some reason is fun for me. I can't explain why describing the game makes it sound CLEARLY like a waste of time but playing it seems fun. Terraria is nothing like Minecraft in many many ways. The feeling that you're in a cavern is one. You collect lots of items but practically all of your early and most of your mid-game equipment will be made by you.
One other note: in it's current incarnation, beating the game on a small map is maybe a 20 hour endeavor. The large map just adds boredom as you search longer for stuff, as far as I can tell. |
